Hunde sind der Hauptwirt und das Hauptreservoir von Leishmania infantum, einem Parasiten, der bei symptomatischen Hunden (canine Leishmaniose) unbehandelt zum Tod führt. Dieser Parasit wird in tropischen und subtropischen Ländern durch den Stich einer Sandfliege (ein kleines Insekt, das mit Mücken und Fliegen verwandt ist) übertragen. Eine direkte Übertragung zwischen Hunden sowie von trächtigen Hündinnen auf ihre Welpen ist jedoch möglich. Die Immunreaktion eines Hundes kann die Infektion über Monate bis Jahre eindämmen und so eine aktive Erkrankung verhindern. Es kann bis zu sieben Jahre nach der Infektion dauern, bis sich Krankheitssymptome entwickeln. Zu den häufigsten Symptomen bei Hunden gehören: Hautprobleme (insbesondere im Kopf- und Druckbereich), vergrößerte Lymphknoten, vergrößerte Milz, Augenprobleme, Gewichtsverlust, Lethargie, Appetitlosigkeit, Nasenbluten, Erbrechen und Durchfall. ... Bei einer Leishmanien-Infektion treten viele häufige Bluttestanomalien auf – keine davon ist jedoch spezifisch für die Infektion. Die canine Leishmaniose breitet sich auf die Nordhalbkugel aus, wo sie bislang kaum bekannt war. Dies ist auf den Klimawandel und die Einfuhr von Hunden zurückzuführen. In den letzten zehn Jahren wurden mehrere Impfstoffe entwickelt, deren Wirksamkeit jedoch begrenzt ist und keine hundertprozentige Sicherheit gewährleistet ist. Dies gilt auch für die in Spanien erhältliche Impfung. Veterinärmedizinische Forscher warten noch immer auf das ideale Medikament, das den Parasiten aus den Zielorganen eliminieren und die Übertragung einschränken kann. Übertragung: Wenn weibliche Sandmücken einen infizierten Wirt beißen und sich von dessen Blut ernähren, können sie sich mit Leishmanien infizieren. Diese Parasiten können dann bei einer anschließenden Blutmahlzeit von derselben Sandmückenart auf einen anderen Wirt übertragen werden. Darüber hinaus kann Leishmaniose von der Mutter auf ihr Kind, von der Hündin auf ihren Welpen oder durch gemeinsame Spritzen übertragen werden. ... Auf den Kanarischen Inseln wurden niedrige Prävalenzzahlen (0–2,5 %) festgestellt, obwohl importierte Fälle nicht ausgeschlossen wurden. Diese Krankheit ist Tierärzten außerhalb der Endemiegebiete weitgehend unbekannt. ... Die meisten weltweit gemeldeten Fälle treten in Bangladesch, Brasilien, Indien, Nepal und im Sudan auf. Risiko für den Menschen Eine bemerkenswerte Anzahl von Leishmaniose-Fällen in der Europäischen Union (EU) stammt von außerhalb Europas, oft aufgrund von Reisen in tropische Länder, in denen Leishmaniose häufiger vorkommt. Impfung und Behandlung: Derzeit gibt es keine Impfung gegen diesen Parasiten. Es gibt jedoch verschiedene Behandlungsmöglichkeiten, gegen einige dieser Medikamente hat der Parasit jedoch im Laufe der Zeit Resistenzen entwickelt. REPORTING ANIMAL ABUSE IN SPAIN Firstly, some advice from protectapet about the cultural differences between what may be seen as unacceptable animal abuse to some people from different parts of Europe, and what is viewed as an acceptable (or legal) way to treat an animal in Spain. "What we do have to remember is that pets in Spain are not as pampered as perhaps we are used to. Dogs, are mostly used as working dogs here in Spain. So before you denounce your neighbour for keeping his dog chained up in his yard… remember that as long as it has food, fresh water and shelter from extreme weather of any type … then the Police may not agree that depriving it of a blanket is tantamount to animal abuse." Thanks to a couple of tools and websites, one from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, and another from the ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista PACMA, anyone who is concerned about an animals welfare in Spain does not need to be concerned, or intimidated by the possibility of understanding local law or the processes required to make a report about animal abuse. Both tools open the process to anyone facing problems with language. OPTION 1: AlertCops AlertCops is a free mobile application, created by the General Sub-Directorate of Information Systems and Communications for Security (SGSICS). It has a new functionality, called “animal abuse”, which will allow any user to inform Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil of animal abuse discreetly and immediately. In real time, users can use the "animal abuse" icon to immediately report abuse when they witness it. Users can choose whether they want to communicate the alert by call or by chat. It also gives the option to attach photos or videos about the event. The alerts will be sent to the closest police centre where the corresponding action protocol will be activated. OPTION 2: PACMA / Yo Denuncio Current advice from The Citizens Advice Bureau of Spain : The ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista (PACMA) has developed a website called ¨Yo Denuncio / I denounce¨ with information on how and where to denounce animal abuse with the relevant authorities, with a set of tools to make the process accessible to all. Similarly to many of you, our basic running costs have increased sharply recently (for example our vets bills, which despite the kindness of our amazing vets, now run into the thousands of Euros every month. OUR MONTHLY VETS BILLS HAVE ALMOST DOUBLED BUT OUR INCOME HAS NOT We dont need to tell you that the economic outlook is bleak and shows no signs of slowing up. But giving in or stopping what we do is not an option for Barkinside. We cannot turn our back on the never ending flow of new cases who are desperate for our help, we also cannot suddenly withdraw the help and support for those who are permanent residents at the Sanctuary. Its not something we can consider. Our residents have experienced nothing except hellish conditions and abuse their entire lives. Their naturally trusting and loving natures have made them vulnerable to all kinds physical and mental violation. It is imperative that they have no doubt that never again will the trust they put in us be broken. Our commitment to them is for the whole of their lifetime, unfortunately maintaining this costs a lot of money. We cannot survive without all the help, donations and support we receive from our many friends. The more successful we are in our rescue mission, the higher our day-to-day costs are. On Saturday's we are now busy preparing for the boot fairs, and making some time for ourselves on Mondays gives us breathing space and time to unload the van, vets etc. Our working day averages 14 to 16 hours, with 36 dogs, horses, cats etc, so please be patient with us. They are on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at Tipsy Terrace in Hondon de las Frailes , and on the 2nd and last Sunday of each month at El Canton. ROSIE & REGGIE, LENA & FOXY Recovering from a life of horror by Barkinside "Now their journey to a new life begins" Towards the end of November we were told about several dogs who were in a desperate situation and needed our help urgently. Barkinside responded immediately. After a long and difficult struggle we had four new babies taking sanctuary with us. This is their story, and a gentle appeal for help with our escalating costs. The 12th of December 2024 marks a milestone in the amazing story of the recovery of the four new dogs that came to join Barkinside two weeks ago. It was an especially big day for the amazing Little Foxy and our beautiful old girl Lena who were both rescued together. Today they they were treated to a professional grooming session courtesy of our very kind friends at Parìso del Perro . Today, at around 1pm (16th of March 2024) everyone's hero, the spectacular being that we all came to know and love as "Noble" came up against something so big that no one, not even he or his Mum, the amazing powerhouse behind this organisation, Jacqueline, could beat. Noble In Loving Memory 2019-2024 Today, at around 1pm (16th of March 2024) everyone's hero, the spectacular being that we all came to know and love as "Noble" came up against something so big that no one, not even he or his Mum, the amazing powerhouse behind this organisation, Jacqueline, could beat. This was the message that greeted us all online today, from his grief stricken friend, mum and rescuer at Barkinside. "I don't know where to start. How do I tell you all. How do I even begin.. This morning, our hero, our lion, our magnificent Noble left us. He went into acute kidney failure and there was nothing I could do this time to save him. The only reason I know I am alive is because I am still breathing. I decided to let him go with Grace, with so so much love, with Peace. I held him, told him how much I loved him, how you all loved him, how we would be together again. That he can run with Oscar, Louis , Nina, Munchkin, Beti, Lola, Spartan and all the most beautiful souls, no longer in this realm. Yes, I am sobbing , my heart is broken. But I had the absolute joy of having this beautiful boy in my life, even for far to shorter time. I held him. And he knew only love.
