Común en países cálidos como España, activa de mayo a octubre. Flebótomos: el propagador silencioso - Sólo 2–4 mm de largo, de color marrón amarillento. - Activo al anochecer y por la noche. - Sólo las hembras muerden para obtener sangre. - Vive en lugares húmedos, oscuros y protegidos. ¿Por qué es peligroso? - Una mordedura puede infectar a tu perro. - Síntomas: pérdida de peso, llagas en la piel, fatiga, fiebre, uñas largas. LEISHMANIASIS Si se detecta a tiempo y no afecta a los órganos principales, la leishmaniosis se puede tratar y controlar de forma muy eficaz y el perro puede llevar una vida larga y feliz. Los perros son el principal huésped y reservorio de Leishmania infantum, un parásito que causa la muerte en perros sintomáticos (leishmaniasis canina) si no se trata. Este parásito se transmite por la picadura de un flebótomo (un pequeño insecto emparentado con los mosquitos y las moscas) en países tropicales y subtropicales, pero existe transmisión directa entre perros, y de perras gestantes a sus cachorros. La respuesta inmunitaria de un perro puede contener la infección, previniendo la enfermedad activa, durante meses o años; pueden pasar hasta 7 años desde el momento de la infección hasta que se presenten los signos de la enfermedad. Los síntomas caninos suelen incluir: problemas en la piel (especialmente alrededor de la cabeza y en los puntos de presión), inflamación de los ganglios linfáticos, inflamación del bazo, problemas oculares, pérdida de peso, letargo, disminución del apetito, hemorragia nasal, vómitos y diarrea. Las cifras son inferiores en el centro de España (1-5 %) y en el norte, mientras que en los Pirineos y el noreste se encontró una prevalencia del 19,5 %, principalmente entre la población de perros de caza. En las Islas Canarias se encontraron cifras de prevalencia bajas (0-2,5 %), aunque no se descartaron casos importados. Esta enfermedad es mayoritariamente desconocida para los veterinarios fuera de las zonas endémicas. En humanos, el parásito se manifiesta de diversas formas, causando leishmaniasis visceral y cutánea en poblaciones de la cuenca mediterránea, norte de África, Sudamérica y Asia occidental. Leishmaniasis cutánea (causada por Leishmania tropica) causa llagas en la piel que suelen curarse espontáneamente en pocos meses, pero que pueden dejar cicatrices desagradables. Se presenta en todo el mundo, incluida la costa mediterránea. Leishmaniasis visceral (causada por Leishmania infantum) causa enfermedad sistémica, que se presenta con fiebre, malestar general, pérdida de peso y anemia, inflamación del bazo, el hígado y los ganglios linfáticos. Barkinside responded immediately. After a long and difficult struggle we had four new babies taking sanctuary with us. This is their story, and a gentle appeal for help with our escalating costs. The 12th of December 2024 marks a milestone in the amazing story of the recovery of the four new dogs that came to join Barkinside two weeks ago. It was an especially big day for the amazing Little Foxy and our beautiful old girl Lena who were both rescued together. They are Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 2pm. Strictly by appointment only. On Saturday's we are now busy preparing for the boot fairs, and making some time for ourselves on Mondays gives us breathing space and time to unload the van, vets etc. Our working day averages 14 to 16 hours, with 36 dogs, horses, cats etc, so please be patient with us. More information about the Boot Fairs can be found on our Events page. They are on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at Tipsy Terrace in Hondon de las Frailes , and on the 2nd and last Sunday of each month at El Canton. REPORTING ANIMAL ABUSE IN SPAIN Firstly, some advice from protectapet about the cultural differences between what may be seen as unacceptable animal abuse to some people from different parts of Europe, and what is viewed as an acceptable (or legal) way to treat an animal in Spain. "What we do have to remember is that pets in Spain are not as pampered as perhaps we are used to. Dogs, are mostly used as working dogs here in Spain. So before you denounce your neighbour for keeping his dog chained up in his yard… remember that as long as it has food, fresh water and shelter from extreme weather of any type … then the Police may not agree that depriving it of a blanket is tantamount to animal abuse." Thanks to a couple of tools and websites, one from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, and another from the ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista PACMA, anyone who is concerned about an animals welfare in Spain does not need to be concerned, or intimidated by the possibility of understanding local law or the processes required to make a report about animal abuse. Both tools open the process to anyone facing problems with language. OPTION 1: AlertCops AlertCops is a free mobile application, created by the General Sub-Directorate of Information Systems and Communications for Security (SGSICS). It has a new functionality, called “animal abuse”, which will allow any user to inform Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil of animal abuse discreetly and immediately. In real time, users can use the "animal abuse" icon to immediately report abuse when they witness it. Users can choose whether they want to communicate the alert by call or by chat. It also gives the option to attach photos or videos about the event. The alerts will be sent to the closest police centre where the corresponding action protocol will be activated. OPTION 2: PACMA / Yo Denuncio Current advice from The Citizens Advice Bureau of Spain : The ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista (PACMA) has developed a website called ¨Yo Denuncio / I denounce¨ with information on how and where to denounce animal abuse with the relevant authorities, with a set of tools to make the process accessible to all. OPTION 3: CONTACT US If you are unable to use either of the other options, please contact us and we will do everything in our power to help you.

Noble In Loving Memory 2019-2024 Today, at around 1pm (16th of March 2024) everyone's hero, the spectacular being that we all came to know and love as "Noble" came up against something so big that no one, not even he or his Mum, the amazing powerhouse behind this organisation, Jacqueline, could beat. This was the message that greeted us all online today, from his grief stricken friend, mum and rescuer at Barkinside. "I don't know where to start. How do I tell you all. How do I even begin.. This morning, our hero, our lion, our magnificent Noble left us. He went into acute kidney failure and there was nothing I could do this time to save him. The only reason I know I am alive is because I am still breathing. I decided to let him go with Grace, with so so much love, with Peace. I held him, told him how much I loved him, how you all loved him, how we would be together again. That he can run with Oscar, Louis , Nina, Munchkin, Beti, Lola, Spartan and all the most beautiful souls, no longer in this realm. Yes, I am sobbing , my heart is broken. But I had the absolute joy of having this beautiful boy in my life, even for far to shorter time. I held him. And he knew only love. Dad was a dog lover too, in their short time together I know how proud he was of Barkinside and the selfless efforts they put in to rescuing animals that society just throws away. I really want to raise some money for this wonderful cause which is why I am running this years London marathon in aid of Barkinside. Please give whatever you can. Those 26 miles are nothing compared to the tireless efforts of my wonderful aunt and her team of volunteers." Similarly to many of you, our basic running costs have increased sharply recently (for example our vets bills, which despite the kindness of our amazing vets, now run into the thousands of Euros every month. OUR MONTHLY VETS BILLS HAVE ALMOST DOUBLED BUT OUR INCOME HAS NOT We dont need to tell you that the economic outlook is bleak and shows no signs of slowing up. But giving in or stopping what we do is not an option for Barkinside. We cannot turn our back on the never ending flow of new cases who are desperate for our help, we also cannot suddenly withdraw the help and support for those who are permanent residents at the Sanctuary. Its not something we can consider. Our residents have experienced nothing except hellish conditions and abuse their entire lives. Their naturally trusting and loving natures have made them vulnerable to all kinds physical and mental violation. It is imperative that they have no doubt that never again will the trust they put in us be broken. Our commitment to them is for the whole of their lifetime, unfortunately maintaining this costs a lot of money. We cannot survive without all the help, donations and support we receive from our many friends. The more successful we are in our rescue mission, the higher our day-to-day costs are. Sharing online via social media and emails, in real life by word of mouth, and mentioning it as we go about our everyday lives. Our mantra is our promise, because everything that Barkinside does is done by volunteers, right from physical support at the Sanctuary, being involved in caring for or rescuing desperately hurt animals, through to action taken online, 100% of every cent or penny raised goes to help those we have rescued.
