Similarly to many of you, our basic running costs have increased sharply recently (for example our vets bills, which despite the kindness of our amazing vets, now run into the thousands of Euros every month. OUR MONTHLY VETS BILLS HAVE ALMOST DOUBLED BUT OUR INCOME HAS NOT We dont need to tell you that the economic outlook is bleak and shows no signs of slowing up. But giving in or stopping what we do is not an option for Barkinside. We cannot turn our back on the never ending flow of new cases who are desperate for our help, we also cannot suddenly withdraw the help and support for those who are permanent residents at the Sanctuary. Its not something we can consider. Our residents have experienced nothing except hellish conditions and abuse their entire lives. Their naturally trusting and loving natures have made them vulnerable to all kinds physical and mental violation. It is imperative that they have no doubt that never again will the trust they put in us be broken. Our commitment to them is for the whole of their lifetime, unfortunately maintaining this costs a lot of money. We cannot survive without all the help, donations and support we receive from our many friends. The more successful we are in our rescue mission, the higher our day-to-day costs are. Leishmaniasis is een ernstige ziekte die wordt veroorzaakt door de Leishmania-parasiet en die zich verspreidt via de beet van een zandvlieg. De ziekte komt veel voor in warme landen zoals Spanje en is actief van mei tot oktober. LEISHMANIASIS Als Leishmaniose in een vroeg stadium wordt ontdekt en de belangrijkste organen niet worden aangetast, kan de ziekte zeer effectief worden behandeld en onder controle worden gehouden. Uw hond kan dan een lang en gelukkig leven leiden. Honden zijn de belangrijkste gastheer en het belangrijkste reservoir van Leishmania infantum, een parasiet die de dood veroorzaakt bij honden met symptomen (hondenleishmaniasis) wanneer deze niet behandeld wordt. Deze parasiet wordt overgedragen via de beet van een zandvlieg (een klein insect dat verwant is aan muggen en vliegen) in tropische en subtropische landen, maar directe overdracht tussen honden en van drachtige honden op hun pups komt ook voor. De immuunreactie van een hond kan de infectie maanden tot jaren onder controle houden en zo een actieve ziekte voorkomen; het kan tot 7 jaar duren vanaf het moment van infectie voordat er tekenen van ziekte ontstaan. Veelvoorkomende symptomen bij honden zijn: huidproblemen (vooral rond de kop en drukpunten), vergrote lymfeklieren, vergrote milt, oogproblemen, gewichtsverlies, lethargie, verminderde eetlust, neusbloedingen, en braken en diarree. Er worden veel voorkomende afwijkingen in bloedtesten gezien bij een Leishmania-infectie, hoewel geen van deze specifiek is voor de infectie. Canine leishmaniasis breidt zich uit naar het noordelijk halfrond, waar het nauwelijks bekend was. Dit komt door klimaatverandering en de import van honden. Er zijn de afgelopen tien jaar verschillende vaccins ontwikkeld, maar hun werkzaamheid is beperkt en niet gegarandeerd 100% effectief. Dit geldt ook voor de vaccinatie die in Spanje beschikbaar is. Veterinaire onderzoekers wachten nog steeds op het ideale medicijn dat de parasiet uit de doelorganen kan verwijderen en de overdracht kan beperken. Verspreiding: Wanneer vrouwelijke zandvliegen bijten en zich voeden met bloed van een geïnfecteerde gastheer, kunnen ze de Leishmania-parasieten oplopen. Deze parasieten kunnen vervolgens door dezelfde zandvliegsoort worden overgedragen op een andere gastheer tijdens een volgende bloedmaaltijd. Bovendien kan Leishmania worden overgedragen van moeder op kind, van teef op pup, of via het delen van injectiespuiten. In Zuid-Europese landen bereikt de seroprevalentie van Canine leishmaniasis (nu "CanL" genoemd) een hoog niveau. Prevalentie in Spanje: CanL is wijdverspreid in Spanje. De ziekte kan in bijna het hele land als endemisch worden beschouwd. In het zuidoosten van het land werd de seroprevalentie vastgesteld op 23,7%. Hotspots zijn gevonden in de regio Axarquía (Málaga). De cijfers liggen lager in Centraal-Spanje (1-5%) en in het noorden, terwijl in de Pyreneeën en de noordoostelijke gebieden een prevalentie van 19,5% werd gevonden, voornamelijk onder de jachthondenpopulatie. Lage prevalentiecijfers (0-2,5%) werden aangetroffen op de Canarische Eilanden, hoewel geïmporteerde gevallen niet werden uitgesloten. Deze ziekte is grotendeels onbekend bij dierenartsen buiten de endemische gebieden. Bij mensen manifesteert de parasiet zich in verschillende vormen en veroorzaakt viscerale en cutane leishmaniasis bij populaties in het Middellandse Zeegebied, Noord-Afrika, Zuid-Amerika en West-Azië. Cutane leishmaniasis: (veroorzaakt door Leishmania tropica), veroorzaakt huidzweren die vaak binnen enkele maanden vanzelf genezen, maar die lelijke littekens kunnen achterlaten; het komt wereldwijd voor, inclusief de Middellandse Zeekust. Viscerale leishmaniasis: (veroorzaakt door Leishmania infantum), veroorzaakt een systemische ziekte, die zich uit in koorts, malaise, gewichtsverlies en bloedarmoede, zwelling van de milt, lever en lymfeklieren; De meeste wereldwijd gerapporteerde gevallen komen voor in Bangladesh, Brazilië, India, Nepal en Soedan. Risico voor mensen Een opmerkelijk aantal gevallen van leishmaniasis in de Europese Unie (EU) komt van buiten Europa, vaak als gevolg van reizen naar tropische landen waar leishmaniasis vaker voorkomt. Vaccinatie en behandeling: Momenteel is er geen vaccinatie beschikbaar voor deze parasiet. Er bestaan echter verschillende behandelingen, hoewel de parasiet in de loop der tijd resistentie heeft ontwikkeld tegen sommige van deze medicijnen. Beschermende maatregelen omvatten: het gebruik van methoden zoals klamboes die behandeld zijn met insectenwerend middel, het rechtstreeks op de huid aanbrengen van insectenwerend middel, het beheersen van de aanwezigheid van insecten in uw huis. ROSIE & REGGIE, LENA & FOXY Recovering from a life of horror by Barkinside "Now their journey to a new life begins" Towards the end of November we were told about several dogs who were in a desperate situation and needed our help urgently. Barkinside responded immediately. After a long and difficult struggle we had four new babies taking sanctuary with us. This is their story, and a gentle appeal for help with our escalating costs. The 12th of December 2024 marks a milestone in the amazing story of the recovery of the four new dogs that came to join Barkinside two weeks ago. It was an especially big day for the amazing Little Foxy and our beautiful old girl Lena who were both rescued together. Today, at around 1pm (16th of March 2024) everyone's hero, the spectacular being that we all came to know and love as "Noble" came up against something so big that no one, not even he or his Mum, the amazing powerhouse behind this organisation, Jacqueline, could beat. Noble In Loving Memory 2019-2024 Today, at around 1pm (16th of March 2024) everyone's hero, the spectacular being that we all came to know and love as "Noble" came up against something so big that no one, not even he or his Mum, the amazing powerhouse behind this organisation, Jacqueline, could beat. This was the message that greeted us all online today, from his grief stricken friend, mum and rescuer at Barkinside. "I don't know where to start. How do I tell you all. How do I even begin.. This morning, our hero, our lion, our magnificent Noble left us. He went into acute kidney failure and there was nothing I could do this time to save him. The only reason I know I am alive is because I am still breathing. I decided to let him go with Grace, with so so much love, with Peace. I held him, told him how much I loved him, how you all loved him, how we would be together again. That he can run with Oscar, Louis , Nina, Munchkin, Beti, Lola, Spartan and all the most beautiful souls, no longer in this realm. Yes, I am sobbing , my heart is broken. But I had the absolute joy of having this beautiful boy in my life, even for far to shorter time. I held him. And he knew only love. REPORTING ANIMAL ABUSE IN SPAIN Firstly, some advice from protectapet about the cultural differences between what may be seen as unacceptable animal abuse to some people from different parts of Europe, and what is viewed as an acceptable (or legal) way to treat an animal in Spain. "What we do have to remember is that pets in Spain are not as pampered as perhaps we are used to. Dogs, are mostly used as working dogs here in Spain. So before you denounce your neighbour for keeping his dog chained up in his yard… remember that as long as it has food, fresh water and shelter from extreme weather of any type … then the Police may not agree that depriving it of a blanket is tantamount to animal abuse." Thanks to a couple of tools and websites, one from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, and another from the ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista PACMA, anyone who is concerned about an animals welfare in Spain does not need to be concerned, or intimidated by the possibility of understanding local law or the processes required to make a report about animal abuse. Both tools open the process to anyone facing problems with language. OPTION 1: AlertCops AlertCops is a free mobile application, created by the General Sub-Directorate of Information Systems and Communications for Security (SGSICS). It has a new functionality, called “animal abuse”, which will allow any user to inform Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil of animal abuse discreetly and immediately. In real time, users can use the "animal abuse" icon to immediately report abuse when they witness it. Users can choose whether they want to communicate the alert by call or by chat. It also gives the option to attach photos or videos about the event. The alerts will be sent to the closest police centre where the corresponding action protocol will be activated. OPTION 2: PACMA / Yo Denuncio Current advice from The Citizens Advice Bureau of Spain : The ´Animal Party´/ Partido Animalista (PACMA) has developed a website called ¨Yo Denuncio / I denounce¨ with information on how and where to denounce animal abuse with the relevant authorities, with a set of tools to make the process accessible to all.
